In Daniel 3, King Nebuchadnezzar (We are going to call him Nezzar), made an overly large, extremely huge statue. Then he ordered that everyone bow down and worship the statue whenever the harps and other musical instruments played. Who ever didn't worship the gold statue would be thrown into to a blazing furnace.
The music played. The harps sang their pretty tune, and everyone bowed to the statue. Well, almost everyone. There were three men who didn't: Hananiah, Mishael, and Azariah. Better known as Shadrach, Meshach, and Abednego. These three men refused to bow the mighty gold statue even under the threat of being thrown into white hot flames.
When Nezzar's servants reported the news of the three rebels back to him, he ordered that the men be brought before him. "Why do you defy me?" Nezzar asked Hananiah, Mishael, and Azariah. "I will give you one more chance to bow before my statue and worship my gods. If you again refuse to do so then you WILL be thrown into the furnace and what god could save you then?"
The three men glanced at each other with a knowing look in their eyes and then replied. "We don't have to defend ourselves to you. The God that we love and serve, He will save us from your furnace because we will never ever worship your statue or your gods."
At this Nezzar became so angry that he had his strongest men tie Hananiah, Mishael, and Azariah then and there. He had the furnace heated seven times hotter than normal and then ordered the three rebels to be thrown in. The furnace was so hot that even the men who threw them into the flames died.
Then as Nezzar watched, all three men walked around in the flames unharmed by the scorching heat. But it wasn't this that Nezzar was so tripped up over. He focused on the men in the flames. He had to blink, look away and then look back. No he wasn't mistaken. There weren't three men walking among the flames but four and the fourth one looked heavenly like a "god". Nezzar got as close to the flames as he dared and called the three rebels out, amazed. Then he ordered that everyone in his kingdom worship the God of Hananiah, Mishael, and Azariah.
This story always makes me think of "Everybody Talks" by Neon Lights.
It started with a whisper...
It all started with just three everyday, ordinary people and because they didn't give in, their faith caught on. A whisper shouted into a raging storm or voices. These three men decided to stand un-bowed before an entire kingdom! They stood their ground and refused to "fit in" with society if that meant that they would have to deny God. They had their world turned upside down. They were ripped out of their home town and taken as captives to Babylon, and yet they didn't give up.
Many of us run into hard, devastating, terrible times and we look to the heavens and shout, "GOD? Where are you?" If only we listened to God's reply..."I died on the cross for you. Surely I am with you now." For even Jesus said, "In this world you will have trouble, but take heart because I am here." We always look to God to save us from the fire, but we don't see that in this story. God does not save us from the fire. No! God saves us in the fire. We only need to STAND STRONG and He will do the rest.
