The Resurrection allows everyone to have a choice. So what are you going to choose? Are you going to live your life for yourself or live your life for God. This later choice implies the fact that while choosing to live your life for God, you are saying Jesus is Lord of all. And the way they explained it at CIY is, Jesus is going to be Lord of all or not Lord at all because He wants to be the center of our lives. And living your life for God is not doing something and then thinking about God afterward…It’s Involving God in every decision and action as a present thought in our minds. It is always thinking of whether or not it is something God wants you to do. It is always thinking of whether or not it is in God’s plan for your life. It is knowing that God is always there and will never leave your side.
And my theory is this: Life is so short that I want to do something big even though my big thing might be forgotten the next morning. I want to serve God even though my service to God might be forgotten in the next breath. I want to help someone even though they might forget that I helped them in the next hour. I want to make a change even though it may not be remembered. The whole point is that I will be making a difference no matter how big or how small it might seem. It will help God’s kingdom grow! It will be a life that counts for God.
One way to do this is to be a rescuer. People are constantly going after the “big rescues” that turn out to be an umbrella sinking in the ocean. (Obviously not a big deal, right?) Numerous people mistake big heroic rescues for things like this because we all want to be a part of a rescue and become blind to the things that actually need a rescuer. One of the exercises we did with this was look a friend in the eye and after the speaker gave a scenario say whether or not we would try to rescue that friend. I think one of the scenarios was the friend falling down an icy cliff about to fall over the edge. Would you slide down and risk losing your life to try and pull a batman by grabbing the ledge with some spikey wrist bands? I looked my best friend in the eye and said, “I’d probably be dumb enough to try, but then we’d both be dead.” But the thing is we don’t have to look for rescues like this. God has given you an identity that no one can change or take from you. It is yours and yours alone. No one else in all of history has an identity even remotely similar to yours. So join the rescue as yourself. Don’t search for some heroic chance, look in your community. You can be a part of someone’s life rescue! (And to be quiet honest, I think that is a ton more heroic than saving a drowning umbrella.) So are you willing to help someone?
You can look away when you see the new kid sitting all alone and people making fun of them because they might dress funny, talk different, or act odd, but it kind of seems silly. Think about what God would want you to do and even if you aren’t big on the God thing, how would you feel if you were in that position? Probably not to great. You’d probably be miserable and want someone to talk to, someone to acknowledge you as a human being rather than some ugly duckling. Even if your reputation is on the line if you help this person, do it anyway. The feeling you get after helping someone in need is amazing. I can’t even use words to describe it. It is great, one of the best feelings I’ve ever had.
So what kind of rescue do you want to be a part of? Something that could change someone’s life, or an umbrella sinking to the bottom of the sea? What kind of life do you want to live? What do you want people to see when they look at you?
Me? I want to help change the world, starting with myself and the things I focus my life on. I want to be a dedicated Christian. I want to follow God with all my heart, soul, mind and strength. I want to lead a life with God in every present thought. I want my life centered on God. I want to be a part of a rescue, but not just any rescue. I want to make a difference, but not just any difference. I want to help someone in need. I want to rescue someone and help them get to eternity! I want people to look at me and see only one thing. I want them to see a kind, caring, giving person who wishes to follow God with their all. I want them to look at me and see nothing but the characteristics that shout God’s name.
