Most people don't know this about me, but I think of each person like and infinite orange. You know the fruit that is all orange? Here is why:
It's what people use to hide the things that they only want trusted people to know. It's like a veil that they throw over themselves because they are afraid that maybe people won't accept them if that knew of the things lurking just beneath the surface. It's the cover story they use to keep all of their secrets safe because those are the things they don't want people to know, the things that they are ashamed of. The orange peal is just what they choose to show people. It's all the things they wish they were, all the things they try to be, all they ways they try to fit in.
To get to know someone you have to peel back all of the thick orange skin. If you have ever pealed an orange you know that it is kind of difficult to get the whole peal without breaking it. You end up uncovering the delicious slices one piece of orange skin at a time. This also applies to people. You can't just walk up to them, have a single conversation, and expect to know the things that only close friends or trusted individuals learn. You have to put in the time of actually talking to them and working at getting to know them by taking a hold of a small piece of peal at a time.
The Stringy Stuff On The Outside:
Once you finally get to the amazing slices you have to still get all the stringy parts of the peal off. To me, this is all the things that people use to test to see if we are actually wanting to get to know
them. Maybe it's the first few deeper things that they tell us to see what we say, what we think.
Then we get to the actual slices and we begin to see the actual person with a lot less clouded efforts to keep us at arms length. The slices are the thing that give the orange a shape. All the things hidden by the peal are the things that give people definition. The slices of an orange is the personality, the real smile, the tears, the raw humanity of the human being. It's the things that begin to give you a clue about how this amazing creature became who they are. It is their hopes, dreams, goals, fears, strengths, weakness, crazy-abnormal-random habits that make them unique all shining through. It is them.
The Weird Stringy Stuff Where All The Pieces Meet:
As you slowly begin to make your way through each infinite slice, (and I say infinite because you can never know everything about one person. There is always more.) you learn more and more about them until you get close to the center where each pieces meet. This is what we all protect and hide because it is out heart, our darkest secrets, our biggest fears, our deepest regrets. There is a song that says, "If they see my heart, they'd see too much." That is what I think of when I think of the center of an orange.
I know this probably is a really strange comparison, but you know what I like strange things. This is the kind of thing I think about. When I get really bored, my mind begins to get angry so it throws strange and deep thoughts at me. (Smiley face)
