One of my favorite Bible verses is 1 Timothy 4:12 which says, “Don’t let anyone think less of you because you are young. Be an example to all believers in what you say, in the way you live, in your love, your faith, and your purity.” Now, let’s analyze this…
Don’t let anyone think less of you because you are young.
-This could mean that you should not let others “think less of” or down grade your self-worth. As in do not listen to all the voices and people telling you that you are not good enough, ignore the ads and commercials when they tell you that you have to change who you are or the way you look to be something in this world. OR it could mean that you should remember that your age doesn’t limit your ability to follow God or lead His people. It does not limit your abilities. It actually has nothing to do with what you can or can’t do for God because He has a plan for you and no matter how hard you try, you won’t be able to mess that up.
Be an example to all believers in what you say… -Paul wrote this to remind Timothy that every word he says portrays his beliefs and values. It also portrays weather or not God is of value to him. The way you talk says many things about you. It can tell others whether or not you are a caring person or if you place a high significance on what others think of you. And knowing this, people can have one conversation with you and already have an idea of what kind of person you are. They will already have the jist of what kind of beliefs you might have and will have subconsciously placed you as a specific person detailed in a specific way in their head. And so Paul was telling this to Timothy to remind him to talk in a way that allows people to see God through his speech because if he talked in an un-Christian manor, then people could call him a hypocrite and would have a hard time telling that he believes in God. For example, if you went up to someone, starting a conversation and every other word they say was a cuss word, would you think of them as a kind, caring, gentle, honest, and spiritual person like that of Jesus? Probably not…
Be an example to all believers…in the way you live…
-Not only was Timothy supposed to talk in a way that would represent God, but he was also to live in the same way, showing his belief and trust in God. We are also to do this. In many places in the Bible, it calls us to live like Jesus did. So what does this mean? It means that we need to do things for God, do everything you do thinking of God. We are supposed to keep our word and do what we say we are going to do. And we are to this in every aspect in life. If a friend needs someone to talk to, listen to them. Don’t do it halfhearted. Put your full effort into everything and people will notice. They will see that you truly care for others and God’s glory will begin to shine through.
Be an example to all believers in…your faith…
-Have you ever heard of Sunday Christians? Well, Sunday Christians are people who go to church every Sunday and listen to the sermon getting excited about God, but they go home and nothing changes. They live life the same. They might even act totally different than they do on Sundays because they see church as “that stuff you do only on Sunday”. But what this part of the verse is saying is that we should live out our faiths in our daily lives. We are not to hide our beliefs in God. Nor are we to pretend Monday through Saturday. We are not made to only worship and learn about the Lord on a single day of the week. We need to live our faith so that we can help expand God’s kingdom.
Be an example to all believers in…your purity…
-This is to have the right motives for doing actions along with having actions that would resemble God’s. So when you go help a friend, don’t do it because you are expecting them to do something in return and don’t do it because you are expecting to gain something from it. Those are the wrong reasons to do good deeds. You should do them because you care and want to help your friend. Not the other way around.
Challenge: Try to memorize 1 Timothy 4:12 this week.
